Welcome to the work-in-progress website of Tenth Leper Press. In a mass-produced world, we make books by hand--cutting, sewing, folding, embellishing. The books themselves juxtapose images and texts chosen to wake up and delight the soul. If you own one, you hold in your hands something precious and crafted with care in the beautiful borough of Brooklyn, New York.

This site will evolve rapidly to showcase many more Tenth Leper books, and will soon offer PayPal ordering. Meanwhile, if you stopped by our display at the Independent and Small Press Book Fair, thanks--and feel free to order via e-mail (we'll send you payment instructions). Just send a message to brenda "at" tenthleper.us.

Future links will tell who the Tenth Leper was...reveal more about the wonderful world of book arts...and create a welcoming place for your comments. Please check back soon!

Introducing 'Transformation Psalter'

A psalter is a collection of psalms, sacred songs from Scripture. It was a popular medieval devotional. Our 'psalter' consists of four accordion-fold books in a slipcase; each presents a few exquisite psalm verses and images on the theme of transformation, growth, and change. All books and slipcases completely handmade of archival materials; images are created using pochoir (a hand-cut stencilling technique). This set would make an unforgettable gift to yourself or another to acknowledge or inspire a shift in professional identity, personal evolution, healing or renewal...or just to reconnect with the joy and mystery of the natural world.

'Curl Up In Peace': A Winter Solstice Message
Beatrice Warde was an eminent 20th-Century typography scholar, but also an inspired writer--elegant, funny, wise and original. This hand-sewn pamphlet reproduces a never-before-published 1934 letter she wrote to some lucky friends, contrasting our hectic 'civilized' life with the instinctive wisdom of nature as exemplified by a hibernating hedgehog. A treasure for anyone seeking to slow down, live a little more in the moment, reconnect with the earth, or beat the seasonal-affective-disorder (SAD) blues! Pamphlet is 12 pages (4.25" x 5.5") bound in parchment-colored cover stock with a simple cocoa-colored stitching on the spine.

'Crossing Brooklyn Ferry'
'Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky, so I felt.'  Walt Whitman's thrilling invocation of the human spirit from Leaves of Grass is captured in a hand-sewn 8-page pamphlet ((5.5" x 7.5") with a pochoir cover suggesting sunset over the East River, and bound with a golden thread. This poem grabs you by the shoulders and lifts you up til your feet dangle. If you have ever felt overwhelmed by Whitman's flood tides of words and energy, this is exactly the right dipperful to get you started--and if you are a Whitman obsessive, this will be a treasure to take along the next time you walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
